A Community Driven Vision

In the heart of North Dakota, the Northern Cass School District spans more than 400 square miles, connecting the communities of Argusville, Arthur, Erie, Gardner, Grandin, and Hunter. While these towns reflect the resilience and spirit of rural life, they also face widening gaps in healthcare access, childcare availability, aging-in-place support, and wellness resources.

The Case for Change

To address these needs, the Northern Cass Community Health & Wellness Center (NCCHWC) was born. This first-of-its-kind initiative, driven by local leadership and powered through partnerships, aims to bring critical services under one roof—right on the campus of Northern Cass School.

In 2023, Creating Community Consulting conducted a comprehensive community engagement process, including surveys and listening sessions. 292 residents participated in a district-wide survey, with strong representation from all six towns.

Our findings included:

  • Over 50% rated access to mental health care, childcare, physical activity, and creative space as subpar or poor.

  • Access to creative and wellness spaces received the lowest ratings.

  • 57 families said they would enroll children in local childcare if it were available.

  • 100% of listening session participants supported the development of the center.

“We are excited to collaborate with the Northern Cass School District on the creation of the Northern Cass Health and Wellness Center. This center has the potential to provide on-site and convenient services to a rural area including primary care, behavioral health support, telehealth services and more. Every student is important to us. Our kids are our future, and by ensuring their health and happiness, we are also ensuring the health of our communities.”
